Skin conductance fluctuations compared to self-report pain scales for the assessment of postoperative pain in children

This study looks at how changes in skin sweating relate to pain. We hope to use this information to more effectively manage pain in children.

We will use a device that measures the electrical activity in your child’s skin using stickers on his or her hand. This is not a painful procedure. The study will take 3-5 extra minutes of your time before surgery. We will also assess your child’s pain after surgery.

Who can participate in this study?

  • In order to participate in this study, your child must be between 7 and 17 years old, be able to speak without difficulty, be in good general health, and be scheduled for painful surgery.

  • Children who do not agree to take part in this study, or who are unable to agree, cannot participate.
