Spontaneous ventilation using total intravenous anesthesia for airway endoscopy in children

This study looks at how anesthesia is managed for airway endoscopy (visual inspection using a tube inserted into the airway/throat) at BC Children's Hospital .

Our normal practice with children is to give anesthetic drugs through an IV (small plastic tube in a vein).  This is called total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). There are other methods of anesthetic management for airway endoscopy and we would like to evaluate the current practice at BC Children's Hospital to see if it can be changed or improved.  Since TIVA is standard procedure at this hospital, there are no changes to your child’s procedure.  This study only involves recording data such as heart rate and blood pressure during and immediately after the operation.

Who can participate in this study?

  • All children undergoing airway endoscopy under general anesthesia are eligible.

Who should not participate in this study?

  • Your child’s anesthesiologist will make this judgment.
